ABOUT US
„At my own home, I never feel quite at home, but in a tavern, I feel right at home.“
The story of Reinthaler’s Beisl begins with a passion for Viennese cuisine and the joy of bringing people together – a tradition that continues to this day and remains at the heart of our family-run restaurant.

OUR STORY
1971-1976
The Beginning
The story of Reinthaler’s Beisl began with Johann Reinthaler Sr. and Berta Reinthaler, who ran the restaurant at Dorotheergasse 4 under the name “Reiter” from 1971 to 1976, with great dedication and enthusiasm. For family reasons, they later moved to Gluckgasse 5, where they continued their family business under the name “Gasthaus Reinthaler”.
1994
Following In His Parents’ Footsteps
Their son, Johann “Hansi” Reinthaler Jr., developed a passion for the hospitality industry at an early age. After completing three years of culinary training, he took over Gasthaus Reinthaler in Gluckgasse in 1994, following his parents’ retirement. Yet he never forgot the original restaurant on Dorotheergasse, where it all began. By then, the premises had been turned into a bar, but Hansi dreamed of bringing them back to life as a traditional Viennese Beisl.

Reinthaler's Beisl
On April 30, 1997, Hansi’s long-held dream finally came true: he was able to bring the original location on Dorotheergasse back into the family business. After just three months of renovations, he reopened it under the name “Reinthaler’s Beisl.” At the time, it was still a small, traditional Viennese pub. The word “Beisl” is a Viennese term for a cozy, traditional neighborhood pub, and the name reflected the modest size of the restaurant at the time. From the very beginning, classic Viennese cuisine and a warm, welcoming atmosphere were at the heart of the establishment.
But Hansi had bigger plans. He wanted to share his love of Viennese cuisine and the unique atmosphere of a traditional Beisl with even more people. Over the years, the restaurant was expanded twice, gradually growing into the beloved Viennese establishment our guests know and love today.

The Next Generation
In 2020, Anna Reinthaler, one of Hansi’s four daughters, joined the family business and began helping her father run the restaurant. In early 2024, she took over Reinthaler’s Beisl, continuing the family tradition in her own right. Since then, she has carried on what her father built with great respect for his legacy and a commitment to keeping Vienna’s traditional Beisl culture alive for generations to come.
